When an Audi TT owner in Nottingham discovered scuffs and scratches on their quarter panel and rear bumper, they brought their prestige vehicle to Centre Court Car Bodyshop. The damage, whilst not structural, affected the car's appearance and required professional attention to restore the paintwork to its original condition. 

Our team of experienced technicians undertook the repair work, delivering results that made the damage completely invisible.

Assessing The Damage

The first stage of any bodywork repair involves a thorough assessment of the damage. Our technicians carefully examined the scuffs on the Audi TT's quarter panel and rear bumper to determine the depth of the scratches and whether the damage had penetrated through the clear coat, colour coat, or primer layers.

This assessment is crucial as it determines the repair approach. Surface level scuffs require different treatment to deeper scratches that have reached the metal or plastic substrate. In this case, the scuffs had damaged the paint layers but had not caused any structural damage to the panels themselves.

Preparation & Surface Cleaning

Before any repair work could begin, the affected areas required thorough cleaning and preparation. Our team washed and degreased the quarter panel and rear bumper, removing all dirt, wax, and contaminants that could interfere with the repair process.

The areas surrounding the damage were also carefully masked using professional grade masking tape and paper. This protects the undamaged paintwork and trim from overspray and preparation materials.

Sanding & Feathering

With the surface prepared, our technicians began the sanding process. Using progressively finer grades of abrasive paper, we carefully sanded the damaged areas to remove the scuffed paint and create a smooth surface for the new paint layers.

The key to a professional finish lies in the feathering technique. This involves gradually tapering the edges of the damaged area so that the transition between the old and new paint is practically invisible. 

Feathering creates a gentle gradient rather than a hard edge, allowing the new paint to blend seamlessly with the existing finish.

For the rear bumper, which is constructed from plastic, extra care was taken during sanding to avoid creating heat buildup that could warp or damage the material.

Priming The Surface

Once the sanding was complete, we applied a high quality automotive primer to the prepared areas. Primer serves several important functions in the repair process.

It provides a uniform surface for the colour coat to adhere to, prevents rust on metal panels, and helps to fill any minor imperfections that remain after sanding.

The primer was applied in thin, even coats, allowing each layer to dry properly before applying the next. This builds up the surface gradually, creating a solid foundation for the colour coat.

Colour Matching

Achieving a perfect colour match is perhaps the most critical aspect of any paint repair. Audi's paint finishes are sophisticated and can vary depending on the age of the vehicle and sun exposure over time.

Our technicians used spectrophotometer technology to analyse the exact colour of the Audi TT's existing paintwork. This device measures the colour at a microscopic level, accounting for factors like metallic flake size and distribution, pearl effects, and colour undertones.

Using this data, we mixed a custom paint formula that precisely matched the vehicle's original finish, providing an invisible repair.

Paint Application

With the perfect colour match prepared, our spray technicians applied the colour coat using professional spray equipment in our dedicated paint booth. The controlled environment of the spray booth eliminates dust and contaminants whilst maintaining consistent temperature and humidity levels.

The colour was applied in several thin coats rather than one thick application. This technique, known as "wet on wet" or "coat on coat," allows each layer to flow together, creating a smooth, even finish without runs or sags. Between coats, we allowed proper flash off time for the solvents to evaporate.

For the metallic finish on this particular Audi TT, careful attention was paid to spray technique, distance, and air pressure to achieve the correct metallic flake orientation and distribution.

Clear Coat Protection

Once the colour coats had been applied, we added several layers of clear coat. The clear coat provides the gloss finish and protects the colour beneath from UV damage, stone chips, and environmental contaminants.

Like the colour application, the clear coat was applied in multiple thin layers, allowing each to flash off before applying the next. This builds up depth and gloss whilst minimising the risk of runs or defects.

Curing & Finishing

After the final clear coat application, the paint required proper curing time. Modern automotive paints are designed to cure at specific temperatures, and our paint booth provides the ideal conditions for this process.

Once fully cured, our technicians carried out the finishing work. 

This involved carefully removing all masking materials and inspecting the repair under different lighting conditions to check for any imperfections.

The final stage involved machine polishing the repaired areas to achieve the perfect gloss level and blend the new paint seamlessly with the surrounding original finish. This polishing process also removes any slight texture differences between the new and old paintwork.
